We heard it through the grapevine that our website was missing a cafe which plays classic soul tunes accompanied with soul warming food. Who better to fill this void than Soul Cafe; Bold Street’s African-American inspired cafe bar.
With nearly 5 years under its belt, Janine Hancock and her team at Soul have been serving up tasty, freshly prepared food from morning until night whilst playing the best of soul, old school R&B (no R.Kelly), motown and reggae music. Music is an important part of the cafe’s history – it actually started life as Soul F.M. radio station and music carries on to be an integral part of its culture; this can be seen by the soul and motown legends that adorn the walls. The homely atmosphere is the perfect place to waste an idle day whilst reading a book and watching the world pass. In the words of Otis Reading it is a place for “sittin’ in the mornin’ sun – I’ll be sittin’ till the evenin’ come”.
Soul Cafe have something for everybody’s tastes from curry to Scouse to a large range of baguettes. We went for the Jamaican Jerk Chicken served with Creole rice, salad and a pineapple salsa. This is a family recipe which has been passed down through the generations and we can confirm she has certainly done her Nanna proud. The jerk seasoning was perfect and the combination of the sweet Pineapple salsa made it finger lickin’ good. We also went for the Memphis Soul Stew which was prime beef cooked slowly with a selection of vegetables in a mildly spice tomato sauce served with wholemeal bread. Warming the belly and the soul, this is the perfect dish for autumn and winter months. Both meals were washed down with a homemade Banana Milkshake which was thick and creamy. It was the kind of shake that gives you a thick milky moustache. But if you fancy a beer or a nice bottle or two of red then that is fine, these guys have got a license sorted.
So if you fancy listening to some Aretha Franklin whilst chowing down on some Jamaican Jerk chicken then Soul Cafe is the place for you.
