A slice of cake and paradise in South Liverpool.

Coffee shops; Liverpool isn’t short of them but with such stiff competition, how do you stand out? Dove & Olive would be great people to ask as the dreary Monday afternoon we went felt like a weekend by any coffee shop’s standards. Dove & Olive is your classic neighbourhood cafe serving fresh, locally sourced food with great wine, coffee, tea and cocktails.

Ruth and her family set out to create Dove & Olive because they have grown up and lived near Dovedale Road all their lives and were looking for a place to share their passion for food, great wine and cakes with friends, family and neighbours. As well as achieving all that, we’re pretty stumped to think of or find a more beautiful neighbourhood cafe than this. The lush green, foliage and tiling gives an almost tropical vibe to the place.

When the family found out 33 Dovedale Road, with its original green awning outside was available, they knew it was just the place for their dream. The shop was originally a travel agents and more recently a back clinic where both businesses had decided to cover the buildings original features. After peeling away they found tiled walls, pressed concrete and wooden floors from the shops original use as a green grocers.

The original features combined with the south facing window really sets the vibes quite nicely. Lovely natural light floods and adorns the shop throughout day. With a beautiful and simple back bar showing off unique bottles of wine supplied by R&H Fine Wines, the green tiles and hanging baskets – you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d left Liverpool and ended up in Paris. You’d also be forgiven for losing half the day people watching, sipping coffee and tucking into a banana bread you’ve convinced yourself is good for you because it’s made of bananas.

The menu is a mixture of classic breakfast, brunch and lunch with a twist. We went for the eggs Benedict with Parma ham and if it hadn’t been so busy and if there wasn’t such a thing as social norms, we’d have licked that plate clean. Hannah, their in-house baker is constantly producing drool-worthy baked goods for the counter. The menu is big enough that there’s a choice for all your veggie, vegan, gluten-free and meat-eating friends but not so big you’re bogged down with the “Did I make a good choice?” guilt.

Dove & Olive is the perfect place to watch the world go by, either on your own or with friends. Just don’t blame us if a quick lunch turns into whole afternoon. Independent Liverpool cardholders can get 10% off all week!
