He who dares, wins.

If you were to propose you were opening a fruit and veg shop, you wouldn’t be bemused to hear the reply “in this climate?”, and we’re pretty sure they’re not on about the weather. However, the difference between those who believe they can achieve something and those who can’t, is exactly that; belief. Michael believed in his dream to own his own organic fruit and veg shop and as a result Liverpool has its very own aberration on Aigburth Road called Maggie’s Farm.

The advent of supermarkets hasn’t been kind to the world of the fruit and veg man or woman but there are a dedicated few not giving up that easy. Equipped with wonky veg in each hand for swords and a local community rooting for them for armour, there are a few mavericks fighting back.

We sat down with Michael, one of those mavericks, to catch up on his organic crusade.

What were you doing before this?

My background is in youth work but when I started a family we decided to change our eating. As it became increasingly harder to source quality local organic stuff I decided to start my own business and this is my inspiration.

Where did the name come from?

The name came from my daughter as my wife had just given birth and she was named after my Nan. It’s also a Bob Dylan song

How long have you wanted your own shop?

This has been a dream of mine for about 3 years. I’ve been a delivery service for over 6 months and now we finally have the shop

Why is it so important to buy local fruit and veg?

It is important to buy local fruit and veg as it supports local farmers and helps the local community. It also minimises waste and helps the environment. We also wanted to show people that organic doesn’t necessarily mean expensive, it can be affordable.

The building Michael now calls home was once a florist for 16 years but they’re moving on to a bigger premises. A success story all round. If you’re not close to the area Maggie’s Farm also runs a delivery service so he can bring it to your doorstep. Good luck Michael, you’ve won us over and we’re positive we’re not the only ones.
