There’s an old and not too inaccurate joke about Liverpool’s dining options not so long ago and it was that you had either Caesar’s Palace or Uncle Sam’s to choose from.
Fast forward to 2019, things couldn’t be more different; there’s food from all over the world, food halls, street food markets and more. And within that explosive mayhem, few have stood the test of time and have managed to carve themselves a loyal following, whilst staying true. Two of those places are Bistro Franc and Bistro Pierre – French bistros that remind you of simpler times. Baskets of bread on arrival, 3 course meals that don’t break the bank and a restaurant that reminds you of the Paris you saw on TV as a kid growing up.
Situated on the junction of Hanover Street and Duke Street, Bistro Franc is just on the fringe of the ‘Liverpool One’ Shopping Centre. This Gallic eatery perfectly complements its sister restaurant Bistro Pierre in the Cavern Quarter. The two-storey restaurant is sited within Church House, the previous home of the Archbishop of Liverpool. The décor, like its sibling bistro, is of a classic rustic French theme. The wooden chairs and tables, exposed brickwork, candles and walls smattered with prints by French artists, altogether create a traditional and authentic ambience.
The warm, inviting and relaxed service is accompanied by fresh and daily changing selection of “entrees” and “plats de resistance”, as well as a variety of mouth-watering Mediterranean dishes. The menus change daily to make use of fresh market produce and this adds to the vibrancy and spontaneity of this bustling inner-city restaurant. Every day from 11.45am till 4.30pm, Bistro Franc boasts the “Lunch Rapide” from £8.50 with 3 courses available for under £13 (roast available on Sundays). “Le Pre-Théâtre” menu is available every evening from 4.30pm till 7pm (6.30pm on Fridays and Saturdays) and offers two courses for £11.95.
The competitively priced “A La Carte” menu is also available every evening from 4.30pm till 10.30pm. Not to mention the hugely popular “Sunday Wine and Dine” offer which is two courses from the “A La Carte” menu plus a bottle of house wine per person for £18.95 from 4.30 till 10pm. Theatre-goers, students, shoppers and the business crowd all gather at Bistro Franc to create an eclectic mix and a wonderful bohemian feel. The food is super comforting, honest and is incredible value for money. We’ve also heard tasty rumours of French-inspired breakfasts and afternoon tea on the horizon.
Authentic French restaurants are few and far between these days but Bistro Pierre delivers in true style. You’ll find this vibrant, inner-city eatery in the heart of Liverpool’s Cavern Quarter near the world famous Mathew Street, in an old warehouse building which, with its wooden floors and exposed brickwork has readily transformed itself into a rustic French bistro. Service is relaxed, warm and friendly. Like its sister restaurant there are more than enough deals to keep coming back but the food, drinks and service are that of what is associated with a much pricier restaurant.
Next time you’re out for a meal definitely check out one of the two bistros and let us know how you get on.
